Student Spotlight

We’re proud to support the next generation of Australian semiconductor talent through the Semiconductor Global Reach Student Fund. The fund provides opportunities for Australian students to increase their skills and knowledge in relation to semiconductor technologies by engaging with training experiences in the international semiconductor community.

Recipients of the fund, Kieren Dyke from the ANU and Jamie Mo from UNSW, are both brilliant examples of what this initiative is all about.

Kieren Dyke, Australian National University

CertificateKieren participated in the AIM Photonics Summer Academy at MIT, a six-day intensive program focused on photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

Kieren deepened his understanding of PIC design and fabrication, attending expert-led lectures on device fundamentals, sustainability, and real-world manufacturing considerations. He explored cutting-edge applications like quantum computing, neuromorphic systems, RF photonics, and LIDAR imaging, all areas he’d previously only encountered in passing. A highlight was a device designworkshop where participants designed a grating antenna for tunable beam steering. Kieren also toured the MIT Photonics and Electronics Research Group labs.

Reflecting on the experience, Kieren shared: “Before I had the opportunity to attend this workshop, I was somewhat on the fence about whether the field was right for me, but the insight I have gained has motivated me to apply for research projects in integrated optics next year…I am now also considering work in the industry.”

Kieren’s experience is a testament to how global exposure can shape and sharpen a student’s path in the semiconductor sector. Congratulations Kieren. We look forward to seeing what’s next for you!

Jamie Mo, University of New South Wales

Jamie at SEMICONJamie had the incredible opportunity to attend SEMICON Southeast Asia 2025. As a student passionate about semiconductor innovation, Jamie immersed himself in a world-class event featuring global leaders, emerging technologies, and industry insights.

At the conference, Jamie attended forums on Market and Industry Outlook and AI for Advanced Product Testing, gaining firsthand exposure to major trends driving the sector. He also took part in Meet the Expert sessions, explored the Career Pavilion, and toured the exhibition floor, broadening his understanding of the industry’s rapidly evolving landscape.

When speaking with S3B about his experience, Jamie reflected on the growing impact of custom silicon, AI-assisted design, and regionalised manufacturing, and how these shifts are creating new opportunities for smaller design houses like his internship company. The experience deepened his perspective on how his current work and future study can contribute to the global semiconductor ecosystem. “I’ve learned
it’s not just about learning new skills and tools,” Jamie shared, “but about evolving how we work, collaborate, and adapt in an industry undergoing constant change.”

Congratulations, Jamie, on making the most of this opportunity. We look forward to seeing where your
career takes you!
